Reading Day With March being National Reading Month, what better time to go into an elementary school to share a book, your talents, and most importantly...your time! That is exactly what Coach Z did with his friend, Tracy Pappas from Total Roller, and one of his 14U DMS players. About 165 kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders assembled in the gym and watched as they got a fun lesson in hockey moves and cool tricks. Then along with listening to books read by Tracy, they learned about healthy eating and the importance of keeping active from Coach Z with fun and engaging presentations. After the assembly, many of the children and all of the DMS gang went out to the playground to what else?....play!! Through donations, DMS was able to provide new playground equipment to each of the classrooms as well as some goodies for each of the kids. Coach Z learned a few new "jump-ropin' " songs and moves, Tracy played tag, and Aaron played basketball with the kids, and everyone had a great time!

Caps and
Quilts for Kids It was a long process getting there, but the journey was well worth the effort. Beginning with raffles, and the sales from the Caps and Quilts for Kids quilt squares, we were able to raise enough money to purchase almost $600 worth of toys, games, and arts/crafts supplies from Toys R Us. We were also able to create a beautiful commemorative quilt exemplifying what can be achieved when we all work together. A very special "Thanks" again to Mrs. Zarem for lending her creative and loving talents in making the quilt for us. There were also several other special items donated like fleece quilts, preemie and infant knitted caps, and even some cool beanies from Mission for the older children in the oncology ward. After gathering everything up we rounded up some players, families, and even coaches and went downtown to Children's Hospital. Although, due to health restrictions, we were unable to actually visit with the children as planned, we were humbled and deeply touched by their gratitude for our contributions and hard work. We were given a tour of the special points of interest in the hospital, shared our beautiful quilt and left there with a renewed hope for better health or at the minimum the knowledge of knowing that perhaps we were able to brighten the day of a child.

Common Ground Sanctuary This was a very last minute find, and the turnout showed it, but fun nonetheless. Our special "Thanks" to the whole Wurth family for bailin' me out and showing up to help. The Common Ground Sanctuary is a 24-Hr Crisis Intervention Organization and finding them happened quite accidentally. I must say, however, that although our first showing was quite low, I believe that this will prove to be an incredible and ongoing opportunity for our DMS Family to reach out to make a difference in other family's lives. We have since been very involved in different aspects of Common Ground with the most recent being the "Mosaic Project" that many of you have already contributed your artful talents to! Please watch for opportunities in the near future to help out with this very worthwhile cause. PROJECT S.N.A.P. (Mosaic Project)

National
Kidney Foundation Walk By far, the easiest and most fun project we have engaged in this year, but still very fulfilling and we are so proud to have been a part of it ! It was a beautiful Spring day when we assembled bright & early on a Sunday morning outside the Detroit Zoo. Once inside we met up with the rest our team. "Team Tinnette" was lead by one of our friends from Joe Dumar's Fieldhouse who has a family member in need of a transplant. DMS was able to make a substantial donation to her Team's total NKF donation using monies collected during our charity raffles. Our donation was then generously matched by LCRH's Matt Koleski. We met on the starting line after a short pep rally with singing, dancing and some games, and then we were off and spent the morning walking around the zoo enjoying the day and all the animals that were out and very active due to the cool weather. After walking the entire zoo, we visited the sponsor tents, collected several free goodies, and then enjoyed a picnic style lunch under the shade of our proudly displayed DMS/Mission banner. It was a great day all around!

Kallitta Air Troop Support An outstanding, and impressively large, team of DMS players, family members and friends met in the Kallitta Air Transport hangar at Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti. There we helped to package over 600 boxes with food, candies, personal hygiene supplies as well as cards filled with encouragement and several other special items. Every box was then delivered by Kallitta Air to one of many US troops stationed in the Middle East. A few thousand service men, women, and even children received comfort and support in the form of "gifts of love from home". It was a small way for those of us here wishing to show our deep gratitude for their sacrifices while serving our Country to preserve our Freedom and helping to keep us safe. Since the deliveries, Kallitta has received and shared with us, numerous "Thank Yous" received from the troops. They expressed how they were moved so deeply and the tremendous strength it provided them knowing the amount of support the have behind them. This proved to be the most physically challenging of all our Outreach Projects with the extreme heat, heavy lifting, and long hours on our feet - but overall it was an overwhelmingly rewarding experience and we are looking forward to returning next year to help again.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen The day started early at the Distribution Warehouse of the Capuchins. We didn't just jump into working though, we first met in a conference room where we "learned" how our helping them, actually is helping us to be better people and how to leave that day with a renewed understanding of how giving of ourselves even in a small way can have such a large impact on our own worlds. We learned about the Capuchins and their mission to help others and then.....we started to work! It wasn't easy either! Some hauled boxes, some packed food, some sorted and hung clothes, some reached out to help those coming in to find food and clothes for their families. And as we were taught during our intro session, all those coming in were treated with high respect and understanding. After all, most do not choose to be in that position, and at any time it could be one of us and we would hope for the same respect. After our work was done there we caravanned thru the city and were given a tour of the Heidelberg Project. An entire street dedicated through art, to the enlightenment of others, of the blight that some suffer. We ended our day sharing a meal with guests from the surrounding community at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. We split up and each sat at different tables with those that came in for a meal and were able to share stories. Just as it was in the morning - we were actually the ones that came away from the experience with a new understanding and respect for those that are not as fortunate as us. I would like to extend a special Thanks to the DMS players, and friends from the 16/18's who drove themselves down there and conducted themselves in such a mature and respectful manner. You know who you are, and we especially appreciate the extra effort it took for you to come unaccompanied by an adult.

DMS JERSEY TRAVELS THE WORLD Be sure to also check out the pictures of our DMS jersey in it's travels through the Middle East with Kallitta Air. What an honor it was to be able to be on this trip even if it was only in "spirit" in the way of a token of our presence. Special Thanks to Jennifer Radtke of Kallitta Air for making that happen!
