COMPETE HARD AT TORHS NATIONALS

After competing in the TORHS Summer Nationals, the DMS program has received rave reviews for their dedication to developing young athletes. This hard work and dedication was evident in the fact that DMS/Storm was proud to have 9 teams representing in this year's TORHS competition held in the Taylor SportsPlex.

12u DMS Coach Rob Mortiere was pleased with his 2-2 round robin play and competed hard in a tough playoff loss to a tough eventual Silver finalist St. Louis Blast team.

12u Mission Storm Coach John Cather was proud of his team as they took eventual winner St. Louis Blast to OT and gave them all they could handle in a tough OT loss in the semis.

14u DMS Coach Steve Kolis had his back up against the wall with a short bench and tough schedule. Persevering is the lesson learned here this year, and for that this team gets an A+.

14u Mission Storm Coach Dave Zarem took this team over at the start of the season after losing their head coach. He promised that he would be in it till the end. In the end they took home the gold.

16u DMS Coach John Murray knows that everything changes in the playoffs. After rolling through the round robin undefeated, they lost a tough one in the first round of the playoffs.

18u DMS Coach Dave Zarem feels the same way as Coach Murray. After being one of the clear favorites they lost a tough one in the semi final game against eventual winner Pittsburgh Fusion.

DMS Women’s Coach Dave Zarem had his first year’s women’s team improving every game with team leader Nicolette Franck between the pipes. Losing to a good Tour Bordercats team in OT taking home Silver in the Championship game.

DMS 30+ Team was a favorite going into this division. After a few close calls, including a 3-2 win in the finals. Player/Coach John Smith's group of players has won an amazing 3 USA National (full check) ice titles, along with 10 Roller Hockey National titles.

DMS Tier 2 Pro Team has had a rough year with some tough losses in tournaments. Coming in to this Pro division Coach Dave Zarem knew they had to commit themselves to winning. Clearing personal schedules and coming in physically prepared was a challenge in itself. With goalie Joel Miller playing with the flu, the team rallied and came out on top in the Championship game 5-2 vs. the number one seed from Ontario.

DETROIT MISSION STARS DOING THEIR PART FOR THE COMMUNITY
March, 2010

In now their 4th season, the Detroit Mission Stars continue to give back to the community. March is recognized around the country as Reading Month. Tracy Pappas (Total Sports Complex Director) was contacted by Thornton Creek Elementary in Northville. The students wanted a hockey player to be their celebrity reader. After years of working with the DMS program Tracy contacted Dave Zarem (DMS Program Director). Together they went into 3 separate classes and read to the students in full roller hockey gear on March 11th. “I don’t consider myself a celebrity, but was honored to contribute to my community” Zarem said. “I have taught at every level in the sport of hockey, and feel I have a lot to offer when it comes to Education, Nutrition and Sportsmanship”.

After seeing how much it meant to the students and teachers and realizing how self-rewarding it was, both Pappas and Zarem wanted to do it again. Good news travels fast. DMS 14u parent Sue Mizgalski- who is a teacher at Messmore Elementary in Sterling Heights-arranged for the duo to come into Messmore on March 30th. With the help of “Ms. Sue” as the kids call her, and her son (DMS 14u player Aaron) they found themselves talking to 165 students in the gymnasium. “Helping our next generation see the importance of staying active, along with learning how to eat a balanced diet is priceless", Pappas said. The day started out with the team, along with DMS player Aaron Mizgalski, skating in full DMS gear and showing off a few trick moves. “Interacting with the kids before reading to them helps set the stage for their full attention” Zarem explained. “We wanted to make sure they took as much information home with them as they could” When they were done it was time for recess. The group headed outside to play everything from hop scotch and jumprope  to a quick game of soccer and basketball. “Just being mentors for a day was very rewarding” the team said.

DETROIT MISSION STARS :  2010 Season Lineup
 February, 2010

After our December tryouts, and working alongside the LCRH program, we have finalized our 2010 teams as follows.  We look forward to expanding to even more teams in 2011. The DMS program is closely working together with Matt Koleski and his Bordercat Program to develop all the young talent in the 6u, 8u, and 10u divisions for their future placement on a club team.

DMS 12u Coach Rob Mortiere

Coach Rob is a true veteran of the program as he is back for his 4th year. After making a few roster changes coach Rob feels like they can be competitive this year. “I look forward to the challenges of coaching young athletes again this year”, said Coach Rob.

DMS 14u Coach Steve Kolis

Coach Kolis is a new addition to the DMS staff and boy, what a catch! Steve brings years of experience, both as a player and coach. Steve had a successful career as a player at Eastern Michigan University winning national titles in which he was the Captain. Steve was also the Director of the Skatin' Station growing up. “We are so happy to have a guy with Steve’s background with our program” said Dave Zarem, DMS Director. “This shows what this program brings to the table”.  We pride ourselves on having not only non-parent coaches,  but quality ones as well”

Mission Storm 14u Coach Dave Zarem

After losing Coach Demitri to a personal situation, which forced him to leave the state to be with his family, DMS Program Director Dave Zarem has stepped up and will coach this team. “This program is more than wins and losses. Family is very important to us and we wish Coach D all the best . This team needed some stability and I look forward to getting this team back to being competitive. It’s only a matter of time” Zarem said.

DMS 16u Coach John Murray

Coach Murray has hit veteran status as well. Coming over to the DMS program with Coach Mortiere, shows that the program has loyalty. Coach Murray has also brought returning players with him and has a nice mix of new talent. “This team was competitive right from tryouts” Coach Murray said. “Although we have a lot of work to do, fine tuning it will be the key to this team winning some tournaments along with league play.”

DMS 18u Coach Dave Zarem

Coach Zarem was very excited to bring along some key players from last year’s Narch Championship team along with his Championship goalie from State Wars. “I really like the mix of veterans and new players we have on this team. We have really improved in a short period of time and look forward to continuing to grow as a team” Coach Zarem commented.
